At Scottsdale Music Academy, we love keeping up with our alumni and hearing how music continues to shape their lives. Recently, we caught up with Brett Striztch, a guitarist, songwriter, and member of the band Cuttlefish, to talk about his journey with music, his biggest inspirations, and where he’s headed next.
When did you first start playing music, and what drew you to your instrument?
“I started playing guitar when I was 8. My parents tell me that I was really good at Guitar Hero, and once I mastered that game they decided that buying me a guitar was the obvious next step.”
Who are some of your biggest musical influences or favorite artists right now?
“The artist that inspires me the most is Andrew Bird. I love how he uses everyday instruments in such unconventional ways and how he treats his songs like living organisms that change over time rather than static recordings left in the past.”
What’s one of your proudest musical moments so far?
“My proudest moment was getting the chance to play for over a thousand people at Downtown Sounds in Bellingham with my band, Cuttlefish.”
How has music impacted your life outside of lessons or performing?
“Music has taught me the value of the beginner’s mindset. Learning an instrument is hard work. If you can accept and enjoy being a beginner at something, it makes the process of learning new things so much more enjoyable.”
What was your favorite thing about Scottsdale Music Academy during your time here?
“My favorite thing was the ability to play live shows at such a young age. I learned so much about performing, stage etiquette, and playing music with others.”
What are you currently working on musically?
“I’ve been playing with my band Cuttlefish for three years, and we’re currently wrapping up our final round of mixing for our last single.”
If you could jam with any musician, living or past, who would it be?
“Bob Marley. I’d be happy just playing shaker.”
What are your goals for the future?
“I want to start another band in a bigger city and continue to gig in other groups as a hired gun! I also want to get better at recording and mixing on my own.”
What are some of your hobbies outside of music?
“Rock climbing, backpacking and camping, and writing.”
Bonus Question: What’s your favorite food?
“BURRITO.” 🌯
Brett is a great reminder of how passion, creativity, and curiosity can take you far in music and beyond. We can’t wait to see what he does next, whether that’s starting a new band, refining his recording skills, or finding the best burrito in town.
