But behind that moment is one very important factor that shapes the entire experience:

The teacher.

A great guitar teacher can turn curiosity into passion, frustration into progress, and a simple lesson into something a child looks forward to every week.

So how do you find the right one?

Look for a Teacher Who Connects With Kids

Children learn best when they feel comfortable and encouraged.

The right guitar teacher knows how to create a positive atmosphere where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and celebrate small victories.

Instead of focusing only on technical instruction, great teachers understand how to connect with young students, making lessons engaging, supportive, and sometimes even playful.

When kids feel understood and encouraged, they’re much more likely to stay motivated.

A Flexible Teaching Style Makes a Difference

No two students learn exactly the same way.

Some children thrive with clear structure and step-by-step instruction. Others respond better when lessons include creativity, games, or learning songs they love.

The best guitar teachers know how to adapt their approach to the student, rather than expecting every student to fit into one rigid method.

This flexibility keeps lessons interesting and helps students progress naturally.

The Right Balance of Fundamentals and Fun

Learning guitar does involve technique and practice, but it should never feel dull.

Great teachers understand that students stay engaged when they feel like they’re making real music. That might mean learning recognizable songs, experimenting with different sounds, or exploring styles the student enjoys.

When lessons balance solid fundamentals with fun musical experiences, students build both skill and enthusiasm.

Teaching Experience Matters

Not every great guitarist automatically becomes a great teacher.

Teaching requires patience, communication, and the ability to explain complex ideas in ways kids can understand.

Look for guitar instructors in Scottsdale who have experience working with young students, guiding them through challenges while celebrating progress along the way.

Watch Your Child’s Reaction

Sometimes the best sign of a great teacher is simple.

After the lesson, does your child seem excited?
Do they want to show you what they learned?
Are they eager to come back next week?

That excitement is often the clearest sign that the teacher is the right fit.

Try Before You Commit

Choosing a guitar teacher in Scottsdale doesn’t have to feel like a big leap. The best way to know if a teacher is right for your child is to simply experience a lesson.

At Scottsdale Music Academy, we strive to create a supportive environment where students feel encouraged while developing real musical skills.

To help families get started, we offer a free trial lesson so you and your child can meet our instructors and see if it feels like the right fit.

You can book your free trial lesson using the link.
SMA Free Trial Lesson

Its grassroots music scene is Scottsdale at its best, raw, authentic, and beautifully local.

🥁 2. Rhythm Room North
📍 8760 E Via de Ventura, Scottsdale, AZ 85258

Vibe: Blues, rock, and classic Arizona grit

A spinoff of Phoenix’s iconic Rhythm Room, this Scottsdale location brings vintage flair and authentic blues energy to North Scottsdale. It’s the kind of place where every riff tells a story.

You’ll catch seasoned musicians alongside newcomers who can shred with the best of them. Whether you’re into guitar solos or drum battles, this spot celebrates the heart of live musicianship, something we at SMA always champion.

🎤 3. Stage 480
📍 480 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85257

Vibe: Modern, eclectic, and bold

Stage 480 is the new pulse of the live music Scottsdale scene. With its state-of-the-art sound system and industrial-meets-luxury design, it’s become a go-to spot for both national tours and emerging Arizona artists.

Every month, Stage 480 spotlights a “Local Legends” night, where Scottsdale bands and performers light up the stage alongside special guests. This venue captures the edgy, modern soul of the city’s evolving sound.

🎧 4. The Soundwell

📍 4141 N Drinkwater Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Vibe: Chill lounge meets creative lab

Part coffeehouse, part co-working hub, The Soundwell is where Scottsdale’s musicians, producers, and dreamers gather. By day, it’s a creative space filled with laptops, lattes, and quiet jam sessions. By night, it transforms into a cozy stage with intimate performances and live acoustic sets.

It’s not just a venue, it’s a hub for local collaboration. If you’re part of the music scene in Scottsdale, chances are you’ve networked, performed, or found inspiration here.

🎹 5. Kazimierz Wine & Whiskey Bar
📍 7137 E Stetson Dr, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Vibe: Intimate, jazzy, and underground-cool

Tucked beneath street level in Old Town, Kazimierz is one of Scottsdale’s most beloved hidden gems for live music. With low lighting, vintage decor, and an unbeatable wine and whiskey selection, it’s the perfect setting for jazz trios, soulful vocalists, and stripped-down acoustic performances.

This is where music lovers go to truly listen. The close-knit atmosphere makes every show feel personal, reinforcing the deep connection between artist and audience that defines Scottsdale’s local scene.

🌵 Connecting Music, Community, and Creativity

What makes Scottsdale’s music scene so special in 2026 isn’t just the talent, it’s the connection. From small local venues to intimate listening rooms, there’s a shared passion for creativity, collaboration, and community.

At SMA, we believe that music education and local culture go hand-in-hand. Many of our students and instructors are active in the Scottsdale live music community, performing, teaching, and keeping the local beat alive.

Whether you’re performing your first gig or just discovering your favorite spot to unwind with live tunes, Scottsdale’s music scene has a place for you.

So grab your guitar, your friends, and your love for sound, because in Scottsdale, the music never stops playing. 🎵

New Year, New Vibes, and a New You with Music

2026 is here, and Scottsdale’s creative energy is louder than ever. The live shows, the jam nights, the up-and-coming local artists, it’s all happening around us. If you’ve ever thought about picking up a guitar, sitting behind a drum kit, or finally learning how to sing confidently in front of people, this is your year to do it.

At Scottsdale Music Academy (SMA), we believe every musician, beginner or advanced, has a sound waiting to be found. Whether you’re chasing a lifelong dream or just looking for a new creative outlet, now’s the perfect time to take that first step.

Here are five ways to make 2026 your most musical year yet (and how SMA can help you make it happen).

1. Set a Musical Goal That Actually Excites You

Forget resolutions that fade by February. Instead, set a goal that gives you something to look forward to.

Ask yourself:

Do I want to learn my favorite song by summer?

Do I want to play my first live gig this year?

Do I want to finally master that tricky solo?

Goals that are specific, personal, and fun keep your motivation strong. At SMA, our instructors work with you to map out custom learning paths based on your interests, whether that’s shredding like John Mayer, singing like Olivia Rodrigo, or producing your first original track.

👉 Pro Tip: Write your musical goal on your phone lock screen or practice space wall. Seeing it every day keeps the energy alive.

2. Start Lessons with a Pro (Not a YouTube Video)

Sure, YouTube tutorials can get you started, but they can’t watch your technique, correct bad habits, or adapt to your pace.

At Scottsdale Music Academy, our local instructors aren’t just talented musicians, they’re active performers and producers in the Scottsdale music scene. They’ll help you learn faster, stay motivated, and connect what you’re learning to real-world music.

Whether you’re taking guitar, drums, piano, bass, vocals, or music production, lessons at SMA are hands-on, modern, and built around your goals, not a generic curriculum.

🎸 “I started lessons at SMA last spring and played my first show by the fall,” says one student. “The energy here is unreal, you feel part of something bigger.”

3. Make Practice a Vibe, Not a Chore

Practicing shouldn’t feel like homework, it should feel like play. The key? Design your practice time around your lifestyle and personality.

Here’s how:

Create a short, 15-minute daily routine instead of one long session.

Practice your favorite songs.

Record yourself weekly to track progress.

Reward yourself when you hit small wins (new chord, clean solo, better timing).

At SMA, instructors keep your practice plan realistic and fun, so you actually want to pick up your instrument.

🎧 Bonus Idea: Build a “2026 Practice Playlist” with tracks that inspire you. Whether you’re a student finding your rhythm, a parent looking to inspire your kid’s creative confidence, or an adult ready to finally pick up that guitar you’ve always wanted to learn, now is your moment.

🎵 1. Start the Year with a Plan (and a Practice Routine That Works)

At SMA, we know that talent grows best with structure, but not just any structure. We believe in building a practice routine that feels inspiring, not exhausting.

Our instructors work closely with each student to create customized lesson plans, so you’re not just running scales, you’re learning the songs and techniques that make you fall in love with your instrument all over again.

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck or losing momentum, this is the time to shake things up. Let 2026 be the year you play smarter, not harder.

⚡ 2. Reignite Your Passion with New Styles and Collaborations

Music isn’t meant to stay in one lane, and neither should you.

Whether you’re into classic rock, indie pop, jazz, or metal, SMA’s team of professional musicians will challenge you to explore new genres, new techniques, and maybe even a new instrument.
We’re not about cookie-cutter lessons. We’re about pushing boundaries. Because that’s where the magic happens.

And for our bands, duos, and advanced students, 2026 is packed with performance opportunities, jam sessions, and recording workshops that take your playing off the page and onto the stage.

🎧 3. Connect with a Community That Plays as Hard as You Do

The SMA community isn’t just a school, it’s a movement.

We’re made up of driven, creative, and fearless musicians of all ages who share one goal: to make great music and have fun doing it.
When you join Scottsdale Music Academy, you’re not just signing up for lessons, you’re joining a tribe that cheers you on, challenges you, and celebrates every breakthrough (and yes, every missed note too).

From our group jam nights to our annual student showcases, there’s always something happening here.
As the year draws to a close, the halls of our school buzz with an energy that only musicians truly understand. The nervous tuning of violins, the rhythmic tapping of drumsticks, the hush before a recital begins, these are the sounds of courage, growth, and joy.

At SMA, this season isn’t just about performances. It’s about celebrating milestones, honoring effort, and setting fresh intentions for the year ahead. Because music isn’t just a skill you practice, it’s a gift you live with.

The Stage: Where Growth Meets Celebration

If you’ve ever watched a young performer step onto a recital stage, you know the moment: a deep breath, a flicker of nerves, and then, magic.

Performances are more than showcases; they’re the culmination of quiet persistence. The daily practice sessions that sometimes end in frustration. The “just one more time” moments that stretch into an hour. The missed notes, the breakthroughs, the small victories that no one sees, until that spotlight hits.

For parents, a recital isn’t just an event on the calendar. It’s a mirror of their child’s resilience and creativity. The applause that follows isn’t only for the performance, it’s for every ounce of growth that led up to it.

And for adult learners, the brave ones who decided it’s never too late to pick up a new instrument, that applause means something deeper. It’s a reminder that self-discovery has no age limit.

The Music Within: How Learning an Instrument Shapes You

Music transforms you from the inside out. Sure, it strengthens memory, coordination, and focus, but its real magic lies in how it reshapes the way you experience life.

When you learn an instrument, you start to listen differently. You hear texture in silence. You understand the art of patience. You learn that mistakes aren’t failures, they’re part of the rhythm.

Confidence: Each mastered piece becomes a statement, “I can do this.”

Empathy: Playing with others teaches you to listen, adjust, and collaborate.

Persistence: Every challenge is a reminder that progress is a process, not a moment.

For children, these lessons ripple out far beyond the music room. For adults, they reignite a sense of curiosity that may have been buried under years of routine.

The Gift That Keeps Playing

Here’s the thing: learning an instrument is one of the few gifts that grows with you. You unwrap new layers of understanding every time you play.

  A beginner sees notes.
     An intermediate sees patterns.
        A lifelong learner feels stories.

Music becomes a way to celebrate not just talent, but transformation. The same song that once felt impossible becomes a personal anthem, a record of how far you’ve come.

So when we talk about “music as a gift,” we’re not talking about something you can wrap in a box. We’re talking about something that expands, across years, across generations, across every note you ever play.

Looking Ahead: Setting Goals That Resonate

As the new year approaches, many of us are setting goals, new pieces to learn, new techniques to master, or simply new courage to perform again.

Here’s a tip: don’t set goals that only measure perfection. Set goals that celebrate connection.

Try performing for family or friends, even informally.

Record yourself and notice how your sound evolves over time.

Explore a new genre that scares you a little, jazz, classical, or even songwriting.

If you’re a parent, set a shared goal with your child: a duet, a family jam, or a mini “living room concert.”

Because the real beauty of music isn’t in how flawless it sounds, it’s in how deeply it connects.

A Note to Parents and Performers

To every parent beaming in the recital audience: thank you for nurturing not just a student, but an artist. Every cheer, every practice reminder, every “you can do it” moment, it all adds up.

To every adult who’s brave enough to begin, restart, or continue learning: you are proof that music is timeless.

And to every performer stepping onto that stage this season: remember, you’re not just playing music. You’re sharing a piece of your story.

The Encore: Music as a Lifelong Companion

As we close this year and look ahead to new rhythms, remember this: music doesn’t end when the recital is over. It echoes. It lingers. It finds its way into your daily life, in your confidence, in your calm, in your joy.

So play boldly. Celebrate fully. Set goals that inspire, not intimidate.
Because in the grand performance of life, music is the one gift that never stops giving, to yourself, to those who listen, and to every year yet to come.

🎵 Here’s to a new year filled with melody, meaning, and momentum.
From all of us at SMA, keep playing your heart out.

There’s a moment right before a performance, when your heart is racing, your palms are sweaty, and you swear the metronome in your mind is ticking louder than usual. Whether you’re sitting at the piano, gripping your guitar, taking a breath before your solo, or stepping up to sing, that moment defines courage. It’s raw, it’s electric, and it’s where confidence is born, not from perfection, but from showing up.

As the year wraps up and the scent of new beginnings fills the air, there’s no better time to reflect on how powerful these little moments of bravery can be, especially for our kids, and yes, for us adults too.

🎶 The Magic of Performing, Big or Small

Here’s the truth: performing isn’t just about showcasing skill. It’s a masterclass in emotional growth. Every time you (or your child) step onto a stage, whether it’s the family living room, a classroom recital, or a coffeehouse open mic, you’re learning how to face fear, express emotion, and connect with others.

Small performances are where confidence is forged. It’s not about applause or flawless execution; it’s about pushing through nerves, trusting your preparation, and realizing that you can do hard things. That’s where self-belief starts to bloom.

Parents often witness this transformation firsthand, that nervous grin before the first note, the proud smile afterward, and the moment of realization that they did it. Confidence doesn’t come from praise; it comes from proof. Performing gives that proof in the most powerful, tangible way possible.

🪞 Adults, This One’s for You Too

Let’s be honest, adults don’t get enough opportunities to shine on stage. Somewhere between deadlines, carpools, and the general chaos of life, we trade creative courage for comfort. But stepping back into music, joining a local jam, performing a duet with your child, or even recording a song for fun, rekindles that spark we often bury under responsibility.

Performing is an antidote to self-doubt. It’s a reminder that progress is worth celebrating, even if your fingers fumble or your voice cracks. Those imperfections? They’re proof that you’re alive, learning, and daring enough to try again.

So, if you’re reading this as a parent watching your child prepare for a recital, consider it your invitation to set your own stage goal for the new year. Maybe it’s learning that one piano piece you’ve always loved, joining your kid for a family performance, or saying “yes” when someone hands you the mic.

🌟 The Confidence Cycle

Every performance fuels a powerful cycle:

Preparation – You practice, you fail, you adjust. Discipline builds quietly.

Performance – You step into discomfort. Courage builds loudly.

Reflection – You realize how far you’ve come. Confidence builds permanently.

That’s why recitals and small showcases matter so much. They aren’t just musical milestones, they’re confidence-building rituals. They teach kids (and adults) to trust themselves, to find beauty in imperfection, and to embrace growth publicly, not just privately.

🎤 Celebrating the Wins

As the year ends, take time to celebrate every note played, every lyric sung, every shaky performance that turned into a proud memory. Parents, your encouragement is the silent rhythm that keeps your child’s confidence steady. Cheer not just for talent, but for bravery.

And to every adult rediscovering their inner artist: you’re allowed to shine too. Confidence isn’t reserved for the young; it’s a renewable resource that grows every time you take the stage, in any form.

🎯 Setting Goals for the New Year

Let’s make this year about bold creativity and fearless expression.

Set a “Stage Goal”, big or small. Maybe it’s performing for friends, joining a group, or recording yourself and sharing it.

Embrace Imperfect Progress, the goal isn’t flawlessness, it’s growth.

Support Performers Around You, your applause might be the spark someone needs to keep going.

💫 The Final Note

Performing, even in the smallest of settings, is one of the purest ways to grow courage and confidence. Every stage, every song, every stumble is a stepping stone toward an unshakable belief in yourself.

So as the lights dim and another year prepares to rise, remember: the world doesn’t need perfection. It needs authenticity. It needs people willing to show up and shine anyway.

This year, let’s all take the stage, in whatever form that means for you, and let our confidence play the loudest note.

Shine on, performer. The stage is yours. 🎵

The holidays are complicated. They’re full of family, reflection, and quiet moments where we inevitably ask ourselves: How much have I grown this year? For kids, growth is visible, new skills, taller heights, louder voices. For adults, growth is quieter. It’s more internal, and sometimes harder to measure.

That’s where music comes in.

Music isn’t just art. It’s a teacher. It demands resilience, rewards persistence, and confronts us with truths about ourselves. The practice room, whether it’s a corner of your living room with a keyboard, a garage with a guitar amp, or just your own voice in the shower, becomes a training ground for life itself.

Lesson 1: Progress is Slow, and That’s the Point

Learning music humbles you fast. You don’t walk into a lesson and master a piece. You fumble, repeat, adjust, repeat again. The progress is microscopic, until suddenly it isn’t.

That lesson matters in a world obsessed with shortcuts. Families watching a child finally play a full song after weeks of struggle see firsthand how perseverance pays off. Adult learners feel the same when their fingers finally cooperate on a tricky passage.

Music doesn’t let us cheat growth. It forces us to sit with the grind, the repetition, the mistakes. That slow progress is not just acceptable, it’s necessary.

Lesson 2: Gratitude for the Small Wins

One clean chord. One scale without tripping. One verse sung in tune. They might seem insignificant, but they are everything.

Music trains us to notice these micro-victories. The small steps are where growth hides, and gratitude sneaks in. Families sharing songs around the holidays are reminded that connection matters more than perfection. Adults picking up an instrument later in life realize the courage to try is itself a milestone.

Gratitude doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s just saying, I got a little better today.

Lesson 3: Patience is Non-Negotiable

Let’s be blunt: Learning music teaches discipline and patience which is needed to learn how to changes chords faster, play that song you’ve been working on. You can’t expect your ear to recognize pitch before it’s trained. The only way through is time.

In life, patience often feels optional. We cut corners, rush outcomes, and expect results now. Music reminds us there is no shortcut to mastery. You can’t fake hours of practice. You can’t skip the process. Families and adult learners alike are reminded: patience isn’t passive, it’s active. It’s choosing to keep going even when you’re frustrated.

Lesson 4: Emotions Need a Language

Music is therapy with a melody. It gives voice to emotions we don’t always know how to name, joy, grief, gratitude, longing. During the holidays, when feelings are high and reflection is unavoidable, music offers a release.

A teenager at the piano after a rough day. A parent singing carols with their kids. An adult learner finally hearing themselves play a song they love. These aren’t just musical moments, they’re emotional lifelines. Music validates the truth that feeling deeply is not weakness, it’s human.

Lesson 5: Growth is Transferable

Here’s the part most people miss: the lessons we learn in the practice room don’t stay there.

Patience at the piano translates to patience in parenting.

Gratitude for a small win translates to gratitude for small moments of connection.

The resilience built while stumbling through a piece translates into resilience when life throws challenges.

Music is a rehearsal for life. Every missed note is practice for how you’ll handle setbacks outside the practice room. Every breakthrough is proof that persistence pays off everywhere.

Closing Reflection

As you gather this holiday season, whether around a glowing tree, a shared meal, or a quiet living room, notice the role music plays. Maybe it’s background noise, maybe it’s the centerpiece, maybe it’s the private ritual that keeps you grounded.

Music is not just sound. It’s discipline. It’s therapy. It’s a celebration. It’s a living lesson in patience, gratitude, and growth.

So lean into it. Whether you’re cheering a child through their first recital or learning your first chord at 40, remember: the practice room is life in miniature. And the lessons you learn there will echo far beyond the music itself.

Holidays have a way of slowing us down, whether we like it or not. We gather with family, pause from work, reflect on the year, and sit with the small (sometimes uncomfortable) spaces in between. And in those spaces, we’re asked to look inward. For families, it’s the recognition of growth, watching kids master a new skill, watching traditions evolve. For adult learners, it’s confronting our own timelines: Am I where I thought I’d be? Am I moving forward at all?

Enter music. Not just as background noise, but as a teacher.

Music has always been a mirror of human resilience. It demands patience, forces humility, and rewards persistence. And if we pay attention, it can reframe the way we see growth, not as a quick fix, but as a lived-in process.

Music as a Training Ground for Patience

Learning music is brutal in the best way possible. No one picks up a guitar and shreds on day one. No one sits at a piano and glides through a sonata without fumbling. Progress is incremental. Awkward. Sometimes maddening.

And that’s the gift.

Music rewires our brains to respect the slow burn. Each practice session becomes a test of discipline. Each repetition reminds us that mastery is not instant. The very act of returning, again and again, to the same piece or scale is an exercise in patience. For families, witnessing a child struggle through “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and then nail it weeks later is proof: growth is invisible until it isn’t.

For adult learners, the lesson cuts deeper. We’re not wired for slowness anymore. Our culture glorifies shortcuts, hacks, and instant results. Music refuses to play by those rules. It whispers, be patient, trust the process.

Gratitude in the Small Wins

The beauty of music isn’t just in the final performance, it’s in the micro-moments along the way. The day your hands finally find the right chord without thinking. The moment your voice holds a note a little longer. The first time you realize you’re not just playing, you’re feeling.

This is where gratitude sneaks in.

Gratitude is less about sweeping achievements and more about recognition. Music teaches us to notice progress on a granular level. A family gathering where everyone sings around the table isn’t about perfect pitch, it’s about togetherness. An adult picking up a violin at 40 and playing a clumsy scale isn’t about virtuosity, it’s about courage.

And in a season that can feel like a comparison trap, who’s hosting the best dinner, whose kids achieved what, who’s got the biggest plans, music reminds us to celebrate the humble victories.

Music as Emotional Medicine

Let’s not forget the obvious: music makes us feel. It can take the edge off stress, pull us out of a mental fog, or heighten joy. Neuroscience backs it up: listening to or playing music activates the reward centers of the brain, releases dopamine, and literally shifts our emotional state.

But beyond the science, there’s the raw truth: music gives us language for emotions we can’t articulate. Gratitude. Frustration. Grief. Hope. Families lean on it during holidays to bond. Adult learners lean on it to process their inner dialogue. Music is the bridge.

Growth Beyond the Notes

Here’s the edgy part: music doesn’t care if you’re “good.” The act of trying is the growth. The patience to return after failure, the humility to start over, the gratitude for the tiniest wins, these are transferable skills.

Patience at the piano translates into patience with your kids. Gratitude for one clean scale translates into gratitude for small moments of connection in your life. The resilience built while learning a song carries into how you face challenges outside the practice room.

That’s the real role of music. It isn’t just about entertainment, it’s about transformation.

Closing Reflection

As you gather this holiday season, whether around a decorated tree, a quiet meal, or a crowded living room, notice the role music plays. Maybe it’s background carols, maybe it’s your teenager practicing a piece they half hate, maybe it’s you strumming three chords to unwind.

Music is more than sound. It’s a practice in patience. It’s a trigger for gratitude. It’s proof that progress is worth celebrating, no matter how slow.

So lean into it. Let music remind you this season: growth isn’t about speed, it’s about staying in the rhythm.

But here’s the truth: it’s not about superhuman memory.
It’s about how you break it down.

That’s where the Chunking Method comes in.

What Is Chunking?

Chunking is a simple (but powerful) learning technique where you break big things into smaller, manageable pieces, or “chunks.”

It’s how we remember phone numbers, grocery lists, and dance moves. And in music? It’s a total game-changer.

Instead of trying to memorize an entire song or scale all at once, chunking teaches you to focus on bite-sized parts, like one measure, one phrase, or one hand movement at a time.
You master that, then move on.

It’s efficient. It’s less overwhelming. And it actually sticks.

Why It Works for Music Students

Learning an instrument is part mental, part muscle memory. When students chunk:

They stay focused instead of getting lost in the whole piece

They build confidence by experiencing quick wins

They retain more because the brain loves patterns and small steps

They practice smarter, not longer

At Scottsdale Music Academy, we teach chunking from Day One, especially for beginners who might feel intimidated. Instead of handing them a whole song and saying “good luck,” we zoom in and zoom out as needed.

It’s like musical LEGO blocks: one solid piece at a time, until the full masterpiece is built.

Chunking in Action

Let’s say your child is learning “Let It Be” on piano.
Rather than teaching the whole song start to finish, we’ll break it into chunks like:

The intro chord progression

The right-hand melody for the verse

The left-hand rhythm pattern

Just the chorus, slowly

Putting hands together, just for one phrase

And so on. Each section becomes a mini-mission. Once they nail it, we celebrate, stack it, and move to the next.

The result? Progress without panic.
Students start to believe in themselves because they’re actually getting it, and fast.

Great for All Ages and Instruments

Chunking works whether you’re 7 or 47, learning guitar or voice, piano or drums. We use it with:

Kids who get frustrated with “long songs”

Teens who want to learn fast but feel stuck

Adults who don’t think they have time to practice

Band students working on live sets or showcases

Chunking isn’t just a method, it’s a mindset shift. You don’t need to master it all at once. You just need to take the next step.

Final Note: Big Wins Start Small

Music can seem overwhelming, especially in the beginning. But when you learn to break it down, and you have the right teacher guiding the way, everything changes.

So whether your child is learning their first song or you’re an adult picking up guitar again after years, remember:
Small chunks. Big breakthroughs.
That’s how we do it at Scottsdale Music Academy.

At Scottsdale Music Academy, we love keeping up with our alumni and hearing how music continues to shape their lives. Recently, we caught up with Brett Striztch, a guitarist, songwriter, and member of the band Cuttlefish, to talk about his journey with music, his biggest inspirations, and where he’s headed next.

When did you first start playing music, and what drew you to your instrument?

“I started playing guitar when I was 8. My parents tell me that I was really good at Guitar Hero, and once I mastered that game they decided that buying me a guitar was the obvious next step.”

Who are some of your biggest musical influences or favorite artists right now?

“The artist that inspires me the most is Andrew Bird. I love how he uses everyday instruments in such unconventional ways and how he treats his songs like living organisms that change over time rather than static recordings left in the past.”

What’s one of your proudest musical moments so far?

“My proudest moment was getting the chance to play for over a thousand people at Downtown Sounds in Bellingham with my band, Cuttlefish.”

How has music impacted your life outside of lessons or performing?

“Music has taught me the value of the beginner’s mindset. Learning an instrument is hard work. If you can accept and enjoy being a beginner at something, it makes the process of learning new things so much more enjoyable.”

What was your favorite thing about Scottsdale Music Academy during your time here?

“My favorite thing was the ability to play live shows at such a young age. I learned so much about performing, stage etiquette, and playing music with others.”

What are you currently working on musically?

“I’ve been playing with my band Cuttlefish for three years, and we’re currently wrapping up our final round of mixing for our last single.”

If you could jam with any musician, living or past, who would it be?

“Bob Marley. I’d be happy just playing shaker.”

What are your goals for the future?

“I want to start another band in a bigger city and continue to gig in other groups as a hired gun! I also want to get better at recording and mixing on my own.”

What are some of your hobbies outside of music?

“Rock climbing, backpacking and camping, and writing.”

Bonus Question: What’s your favorite food?

“BURRITO.” 🌯

Brett is a great reminder of how passion, creativity, and curiosity can take you far in music and beyond. We can’t wait to see what he does next, whether that’s starting a new band, refining his recording skills, or finding the best burrito in town.
